Housing Benefit is a national welfare benefit paid locally by Councils. The purpose of the housing benefit scheme is to help people on low incomes to pay their rent.

Working age customers cannot make a new application for Housing Benefit (unless they fall into one of the exceptions categories). If you do not fall into one of the exception categories, any help with rent, must be met through Universal Credit instead.
Additionally, you cannot claim Housing Benefit if:
•you have savings of £16000 or above (unless you are receiving Guaranteed Pension Credit).
•you are a close relative of your landlord, who also lives with you.
•you are claiming Universal Credit.
•It is in respect of a property you have previously owned, in the last 5 years, unless you had to sell the property in order to continue living there.
